The 99%: Why the Real Housewives of Atlanta Aren’t... →
Melissa Harris Perry also discusses this concept in Sister Citizen, regarding fictive kinship, defined as the reciprocal social and economic relationships within communities of color: “If one’s sense of self is connected to the positive accomplishments of other African Americans,” she says, “then it is also linked to stereotypes and other negative portrayals of that race.” In other words,...

White lesbians are the only lesbians, don't cha...
sapphrikah: Why are there only white womyn (besides maybe, Carmen de la Pica Morales) on this site, for the most part? I sincerely want to know.
sapphoria: Dunno. I post what I find. When I find images of cute women of color together, I post them. Maybe there aren’t that many out there. Why do you have mostly blacks on yours?
sapphrikah: Lol, "blacks." Because there are a MYRIAD of messages in the media constantly promoting a eurocentric standard of beauty. Light skin, slim facial features, straight hair, light hair, light eyes, etc. It is little known to the white population but the amount of damage done to the self-esteem of blacks alone is astounding. We live in a white world, where you are guaranteed to be able to find yourself as a white person represented on television, in novels, you name it. It has done so much damage in fact that among us there is a stigma against darker people, who are often said to be more ugly by our very own peers. Our hair as it would grow naturally, kinky and nappy, has become taboo. “Nappy” is very much a bad word in our communities. Over 90% of black womyn in America get a perm or a weave to have more Eurocentric assimilating hair before they’re even old enough to say now. We are brought up hating what sets us apart from that standard of beauty, in a self-loathing, internalized-racist mentality. It is important, once this is noticed, for many of us, including myself, to reinforce the fact that we too are and can be beautiful. I don’t go out of the way to fill my blog with white people because we have enough white-worship going on, we have been told enough that white people are beautiful. I find beauty in black bodies and make it known, so that others can realize we have it just as much as any other race does. And quite frankly, we clearly have enough mediums chock full of white people, my blog doesn’t need to be another one. Nice try, though.
SCHOOLED.
